The original version of the ballet "Cleopatra" tells the story of a little-known period in the life of the young Egyptian queen, when she was just beginning her struggle for the throne. "Cleopatra" is a vibrant performance with a powerful inner energy. The elegant and lavish costumes, with their rich embroidery and painting, the transforming props, the rhythmically charged music, and the original choreography create a magical and captivating atmosphere that transports the audience back to the era of ancient Egypt.

On July 20, 2016, the Mariinsky Theatre hosted Kazastan’s Astana Ballet as part of the Stars of White Nights summer festival. The company presented two ballets “Gaia” – a contemporary ballet about the Earth and its various elements, choreographed by Ricardo Amarante – and “Cleopatra” set to Maurice Ravel’s music (including his timeless Boléro – originally composed as a ballet commissioned by the Russian actress and dancer Ida Rubinstein in 1928) and choreographed by Nikolai Markelov.

Where does the idea for a ballet performance come from? In modern ballets, there is not always a plot, but if there is one, does it always serve as the starting point for the creative process? Alternatively, the musical composition can be chosen to dictate both the choreography and the plot. This is what happened with choreographer Nikolai Markelov, who set out to create a ballet based on Maurice Ravel's "Bolero." He was not the first to see the choreographic potential in this work, as Bronislava Nijinska and Maurice Béjart had already done.…
