Romeo and Juliet

2019, Tchaikovsky State Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Udmurt Republic, Ballet. Composer: Sergey Prokofiev Choreographer: Nikolay Markelov
Romeo and Juliet

In his version of the ballet Romeo and Juliet, Nikolai Markelov draws on classical tradition to create a production with exquisite costumes and historical settings. Following Shakespeare’s epigraph, «The children of the leaders love each other, but fate plots against them,» the choreographer introduces the characters of the mysterious Parcae, the goddesses of fate. These unseen and powerful beings control the course of events, making the lovers’ demise inevitable.
