The Bat is one of the most famous examples of Viennese operetta, filled with sparkling waltzes, comedic twists, and a champagne-like mood. It premiered on April 5, 1874, at the An der Wien Theater in Vienna. The libretto was written by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée, based on a French vaudeville. The plot revolves around a revenge joke: Dr. Falk, once humiliated by his friend Eisenstein, orchestrates a complex plot involving masquerade, flirtation, and involuntary imprisonment. The overture and the famous «Champagne Song» remain beloved classics worldwide.

A century and a half ago, Johann Strauss, in the prime of his creative powers, began work on his second operetta. Its plot was a combination of the German farce "Imprisonment" and the French vaudeville "New Year's Eve." Strauss enjoyed the libretto, which was lively, witty, and sparkling. The score was completed in just six weeks. It has been edited several times, and in the latest version, the Bat's journey around the world has become truly triumphant, crowning the century of Viennese operetta.
