The Merry Widow

The Golden Fund of Theatrical Productions of Russia

Franz Lehár’s operetta «The Merry Widow» was first performed in Vienna in 1905 and is rightfully considered the «Queen of Operettas.» The story revolves around the wealthy widow, Hanna Glawari, whose fortune threatens the financial stability of the fictional country of Pontevedro. The production by the Omsk State Musical Theatre, which premiered on April 7, 2021, was directed by Alexander Lebedev and designed by Sergey Novikov. Novikov’s luxurious set design immerses the audience in the Art Nouveau era of the early 20th century, and the exquisite costumes and vibrant visual elements of the production have received critical acclaim.
