Alexander Pantykin’s opera «Antigone» was staged at the Irkutsk Music Theatre in December 2024, marking the 30th anniversary of Vladimir Sokolov’s original version from 1994. The play is based on Sophocles’ tragedy, where Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, defies King Creon and buries her brother Polynices, willingly accepting death as a price for her loyalty to her duty. Production designer Sergey Novikov created an impressive set design, and the production features soloists, a choir, a ballet, a symphony orchestra, and the rock band Extrovert. The libretto includes poems by Marina Tsvetaeva and Osip Mandelstam. The production was awarded the Musical Heart of the Theatre prize for best orchestration.

Antigone
Antigona is a play about the human right to argue with the system when it is unjust. Powerful rock, modern sound, and the eternal question: what is more important — your principles or a convenient order? There are no right answers, only your choice: which side are you on in the main argument of humanity?Read more -
"Nothing has changed since the time of Sophocles."
Alexander Pantykin is a musician and composer who, according to his own words, is the only one in the country who has a knowledge of both philharmonic academic composition and rock style. Therefore, it is not surprising that the N. M. Zagursky Irkutsk Music Theatre invited Alexander Alexandrovich to adapt Vladimir Sokolov's music for a new production of the rock opera "Antigone."
We spoke with the composer about his new perspective on Sophocles' play, the role of Irkutsk in Russian culture, and his ability to "tame" inspiration.Read more -

A rock tragedy
The rock opera Antigona, performed on the stage of the N.M. Zagursky Irkutsk Regional Music Theatre, is undoubtedly the most striking premiere of the season. Directed by Anastasia Grinenko, the theatre's chief director, the production showcases a dramatic intensity, a seamless blend of styles and eras, and a poignant musical score that captivates from the very first notes. However, the most remarkable aspect of the production is its ability to capture the essence of Vladimir Sokolov's work, the composer and founder of the Pilgrims Theatre in Irkutsk, who composed the music for Antigona 30 years ago.Read more -
